New Firehouse Project Presented to the Public

By Lieutenant Heather Feldman
September 28, 2018

On Thursday, September 27th, the Bedford Fire Department hosted a public meeting on the apparatus floor to unveil plans for a new headquarters at 550 Old Post Road. Members of the Department welcomed the community to our firehouse of almost 90 years and offered refreshments before the presentation.

Dan Hollis, a former Bedford Firefighter and Counsel for the project, hosted the meeting.

First Assistant Chief Andrew Klein talked about the issues we face operating out of the current firehouse, the reasons those issues render the building obsolete, and the options that were considered before deciding to build at 550 Old Post Road. He also answered the most frequently asked question about the new firehouse: at the new building, there will NOT be a horn that sounds every time someone calls 911.

The professional team that built the project then explained their contributions in turn: the full PowerPoint presentation is available for viewing on our website under the New Firehouse link.

Our Site Engineer, Barry Naderman, talked about the geography, geology, and ecosystem of the site and showed a site map with boundaries, wetlands, and buffers. Mr. Naderman is President of Naderman Land Planning and Engineering.

John Imbiano, a Principal at IQ Landscape Architects, explained how much of the site will be affected by the construction, and the plans for landscaping those 3+ acres of the 10 acre parcel.

H2M architects+engineers handled the next two segments of the presentation. Patrick Stone, RA, explained the design process and walked the crowd through the floor plans and exterior elevations. Joe Mottola, COO of H2M, talked about cost projections and value engineering.

John Collins of Maser Consultants Traffic Engineering discussed the traffic study, its findings, and the DOT's requirements.

Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick and Mt Kisco Fire Commissioner Gina DiLeo addressed the assembly and both voiced support for the new firehouse project.

A public Q&A followed. The questions from that session will be worked into our FAQ section.
