Bedford Fire Department Wears Blue For Autism Awareness Month
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By President Donna Orrico
April 3, 2018

April is Autism Awareness Month.

There is no single known cause of Autism. There are families all over the world, and in our communities that are affected by this condition. There are many resources on the internet and locally to learn more about Autism and get support if you are a family affected.

Not only did we wear blue to raise awareness but look out for our vehicles where we have hung our support magnets!

Some facts about Autism:

From Autism Society
About 1 percent of the world population has autism spectrum disorder. (CDC, 2014)
Prevalence in the United States is estimated at 1 in 68 births. (CDC, 2014)
More than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. (Buescher et al., 2014)
Prevalence of autism in U.S. children increased by 119.4 percent from 2000 (1 in 150) to 2010 (1 in 68). (CDC, 2014) Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability. (CDC, 2008)

From Autism Speaks
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.
An estimated 50,000 teens with autism become adults – and lose school-based autism services – each year.
Around one third of people with autism remain nonverbal.
Around one third of people with autism have an intellectual disability.
Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias.
